FAQs

When are Civic Robes Worn?

Robes are worn at Civic & Ceremonial events throughout the year. Mayoral robes are only normally worn at ceremonial functions such as Annual Council and Remembrance Sunday Services when other members of the council are invited to attend, or on other occasions if the mayor thinks it appropriate.

Are the Robes tailored to the individual?

The Robes are made so they are suitable for various wearers. Michaels Robes are made at a standard length which is suitable for the majority but there are occasions when the Robe needs to be adjusted.

Can Civic Robes be cleaned?

Cleaning & refurbishment of the Civic Robes is very important. With the long history and story behind every robe, we understand how valuable robes are to councils and also the wearer.

Sometimes a brand-new robe isn’t always feasible so Michaels provide a cost effective, professional, and specialised cleaning & repair service that will increase the longevity of robes.

The Mayor’s Robe is extremely heavy?

Traditionally, older robe were made from a heavy Merino Wool called Superfine. Michaels Civic Robes offer lighter weight fabrics such a Pure Wool, Panama Wool & Panama Polyester.

On behalf of the Guild of Mace-Bearers please accept my sincerest thanks for attending this year’s Conference and Training in Southend-on-Sea. It was fantastic to get an in depth understanding of the Care of Civic Robes & Regalia and all the delegates went away armed with information that will assist them and their local Authorities.
